Indian athletics legend Milkha Singh on Tuesday hit back at Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s father Salim Khan by say ing that the movie industry hasn’t done any favour by making a film on him.Salim has tried to defend his son’s appointment as the goodwill ambassador of the Indian contingent for the Rio Olympic Games. The move to appoint Salman was questioned by several members of the Indian sports fraternity, including Milkha and 2012 London Olympics wrestling bronze medallist Yogeshwar Dutt. “Let him (Salim) have his views. I don’t have anything to say regarding this. I have already expressed my views. All the members of the Olympic contingent are our ambassadors,“ the multiple Asian champion was quoted as saying by Times Now. “The IOA should have thought of what’s the need of the ambassador. I’m saying that the teams which are going be it shooting, wrestling, boxing or athletics, they all are our ambassadors. Out of 120 crore people in India, they have been our ambassadors then what is the need of any other ambassador?
Milkha, who finished fourth in the 400 metres sprint at the 1960 Olympics, continued: “It’s okay they have made a film on me. I don’t think that the movie industry has done me a favour by making a film on my life.“

 

Delhi trying to defame Islamabad over Azhar, says Pak foreign secy

Pakistan foreign secretary Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry on Tuesday accused India of trying to defame Pakistan in international fora by persisting with the listing of Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar in the UN 1267 Sanctions Committee. The issue of Masood Azhar, being a big part of India’s current diplomatic engagements, featured prominently in his discus sions with foreign secretary S Jaishankar.Pakistan’s response appears to suggest there will be little `give’ from Islamabad on the listing of Azhar. China has placed a “technical hold“ on Azhar’s designation. After India protested, China asked India to “consult“ Pakistan on the is sue.This was reiterated to TOI by Chinese officials in Delhi.The Azhar issue has been flagged by foreign minister Sushma Swaraj with her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, and NSA Ajit Doval with his counterpart Yang Jiechi.In Beijing, the Chinese government clarified that status quo would prevail on the Azhar listing unless Pakistan allowed it.The foreign ministry spokesperson was quoted as saying that the Azhar block is “in line with Security Council resolutions and the 1267 committee’s rules of procedure for China to place a technical hold on the listing … the committee encourages communication between countries that ask for the listing and countries where individuals or entitities covered in the listing come from or live in. We encourage all parties related to the listing of Masood Azhar to have direct communication and work out a solution through serious consultation.“

Both sides must have direct talks on Jaish chief: China

India and Pakistan should resolve the issue over Masood Azhar through “direct“ and “serious consultations“, China on Tuesday said, weeks after blocking India’s bid in the UN to ban the JeM chief that generated negativity in bilateral ties.

“We encourage all parties related to the listing matter of Masood Azhar to have direct communication and work out a solution through serious consultations,“ Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said in a written communication to PTI on the issue which drew serious protests from New Delhi over Beijing’s last minute move to block its bid to slap a UN ban on Azhar. Replying to a question about whether there is any change in China’s stand on the issue after a number of top Indian officials conveyed India’s strong concerns over the move, Hua said as per the rules of the UN Committee on counterterrorism, the relevant countries should have direct talks. The disgrace at Malegaon Right-wing terror cases to test NIA credibility

The discharge of the nine accused Muslims in the 2006 Malegaon blasts case leaves a blot on the functioning of India’s premier investigative agencies. A failure to hold top bosses accountable encourages them to misuse anti-terror laws. Framing innocents in crimes they have not committed has become almost an everyday occurrence in this country. When Maharashtra’s ATS (anti-terror squad) picked up nine Muslims after the Malegaon blasts that left 37 people dead, few eyebrows were raised. When the CBI took over the investigation and filed a charge-sheet, their guilt stood almost established in the national conscience. Post 9/11, members of certain communities, including Muslims, have unfortunately been stereotyped as terrorists. It came as a huge surprise when the third agency to probe the case, NIA (National Investigation Agency formed after 26/11), stumbled upon a confession by Swami Aseemanand, picked up for the 2007 Mecca Masjid blast, saying that a right-wing group was involved in the Malegaon blasts. For the first time four right-wing terrorists were arrested and the term “saffron terror” gained currency thereafter. The innocent Muslim accused got bail finally but not before spending five years in jail. After the change of government at the Centre in 2014 an allegation of bias has frequently been thrown at the NIA and not just by human rights activists. The NIA has filed a charge-sheet against the four right-wing suspects in the Malegaon case but done little else. It has so far found no evidence against them. What lends credence to the charge is the fact that about 40 witnesses have turned hostile in the 2007 Ajmer Dargah and Samjhauta Express blast cases.The discharge of the accused in the Malegaon case and possible acquittals in other right-wing terror cases will dent the NIA’s image. Its credibility is at stake. Already its Pathankot handling has raised questions. If terror cases are pursued on communal lines, as an impression to this effect is gaining ground, it would jeopardise India’s fight against terror and its right to ask Pakistan to proceed against its own Masood Azhars and Hafiz Saeeds. There cannot be “good terrorists” and “bad terrorists”.

Govt allows women in combat roles in all CAPFs

With the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) allowing women to join its supervisory combat roles, women can now be inducted as officers in combat roles in all five Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs). The decision was taken by the government in the backdrop of Home Minister Rajnath Singh announcing 33% reservation for women at constable level posts in CRPF and CISF.

Srinagar, April 19

One person was arrested in connection with an alleged molestation case of a girl in Handwara, an incident that triggered a cycle of violence for past one week in North Kashmir.

Hilal Ahmed Bandey, one of the two accused identified, was arrested from Handwara by the Jammu and Kashmir Police last night, official sources said, adding he is being questioned.

Bandey was among the two persons named by the girl in her statement before Chief Judicial Magistrate. He is accused of manhandling the girl on April 12 while she was stepping out of a public restroom in Handwara town.

The girl had also denied the allegation by local people that an armyman had tried to molest her.

In her statement before the Judicial Magistrate, “she said that on April 12 after school hours, while proceeding to her home with her friend, she entered in a public lavatory near main chowk in Handwara for answering the call of nature. As soon as she came out of lavatory she was confronted, assaulted and dragged by two boys and her bag was snatched.”

“One of the boys was in school uniform. The production of the girl along with her father before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Handwara was to comply with the order of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court,” police had said.

The sources said that a manhunt had been launched to arrest the other accused named by the girl in her statement to unravel the entire conspiracy. Initial investigation indicates that the girl was spurning offers for a relationship from one of the two boys.

However, the entire case will be solved once the second accused is also arrested, the sources said.

Immediately, after the locals dragged the girl from the public restroom, angry mob started pelting stones and ransacked the Army bunker in Handwara town.

Incidentally, the locals had been demanding withdrawal of the bunker for quite sometime, but the Army had put its foot down, saying it was strategically important for the troops.

Now the state government is likely to hand over the bunker to civil administration for development.

Meanwhile, curfew-like restrictions continued in Handwara and its adjoining areas.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has appealed to the people to help restore peace and promised severe punishment to those involved in the violence in Handwara and Kupwara that left five people dead. —PTI

Case registered against Kanhaiya in Kanpur court over remarks on Army men in Kashmir

 A case has been registered against JNU students union president Kanhaiya Kumar on Thursday in a Kanpur civil court over his remarks against Army personnel in Kashmir.While addressing students at a women’s day march on Wednesday, Kanhaiya Kumar had said, “No matter how much you try to stop us, we will speak up against human rights violations. We will raise our voice against AFSPA. While we have a lot of respect for our soldiers, we will still talk about the fact that in Kashmir women are raped by security personnel.”

“During war in Rwanda 1000 women were raped. In Africa during the ethnic conflict, when military attacks other group firstly their women were raped. You take example of Gujarat, women were not just killed but were raped first,” he added.

Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha on Wednesday filed a complaint in Vasant Vihar police station against Kanhaiya and JNU professor Nivedita Menon saying they made “anti-national” statements in the aftermath of February 9 event.-

A senior police officer said, “We have received the complaint and the matter is being looked into. No FIR has been registered yet”. “Despite the submission of an undertaking before court, Kanhaiya has yet again addressed a gathering of students and uttered poisonous words against the Indian Army, labelling them as rapists of Kashmiri Women,” a BJYM statement said. “JNU professor Nivedita Menon has been spewing hatred against the Indian Armed Forces in public meetings as well. She made statements like it is recognized worldwide that India is illegally occupying Kashmir,” it added. When contacted Menon, who teaches at the Centre for Comparative Politics and Political Theory at the School of International Studies in JNU said, ” I don’t believe anything I said was anti-national”. Kanhaiya’s party All India Students Federation (AISF) maintained that, “he made the remarks in context of atrocities on women worldwide and not just in Kashmir. He in no way meant to demean Army or any other force and he clarified that in his speech too”. The ABVP which had objected to the February 9 event as well, issued a statement saying, “the judge in her order also advised Kanhaiaya to not forget the contribution of those sacrificing lives on borders. His statement is an attack on Indian Army”. Kanhaiya was arrested on February 12 in a sedition case over an event on campus against hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru during which anti-national slogans were allegedly raised. He was granted an interim bail for six months by Delhi High Court last week. (With ANI inputs) –

Pak violates truce on international border in J&K

Jammu, April 19

Pakistani troops on Tuesday resorted to ceasefire violation along the International Border (IB) in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The truce violation came hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Katra.

Pakistani troops fired four-five rounds on a forward post in Samba sector early this morning, a senior BSF officer said.

BSF troops, guarding the borderline, retaliated, he said, adding there was no loss of life or injury to anyone.

BSF troops also picked up suspicious movement near a forward area in Samba sector and resorted to firing thereby forcing the person to flee, he said.

The Prime Minister has arrived at Mata Vaishno Devi University complex where he is scheduled to inaugurate a super speciality hospital, a sports stadium and take part in the convocation after which he is going to address a public meeting today. —PTI

Girl killed as Army vehicle hits motorcycle

An 11-year-old schoolgirl died after a rashly driven Army vehicle allegedly hit a motorcycle near DAV Public School in the Kanoyian area of Poonch district this morning.The deceased has been identified as Payal Devi, a resident of Mangnar village in Poonch.Sources said the Poonch police received information about the accident around 9 am today. The police rushed to the spot and found the girl lying in a pool of blood, they added.At the time of the accident, the girl was going to school with her uncle on a motorcycle.A police officer said the girl died instantly, adding that the police have started investigation into the matter.The driver of the Army vehicle, however, managed to flee.Meanwhile, the police said a hunt was on to nab the erring driver.
