Israel will not agree to ceasefire, says PM Netanyahu, draws parallels to US position after bombing of Pearl Harbor

Tel Aviv, October 31

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday made it clear that Israel would not agree to a ceasefire, drawing parallels to the United States’ position after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

He noted that calls for a ceasefire between Israel and Gaza are calls for Israel to surrender to Hamas.

While addressing a press briefing, Netanyahu said, “I want to make clear Israel’s position regarding the ceasefire. Just as the United States would not agree to a ceasefire after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, or after the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Israel will not agree to a cessation of hostilities after the horrific attacks of October 7.”

“Calls for a ceasefire are calls for Israel to surrender to Hamas, to surrender to terror, to surrender to barbarism. That will not happen. Ladies and gentlemen, the Bible says that there is a time for peace and a time for war. This is a time for war. A war for a common future,” he added.

He called it a turning point for nations and said that it is time for everyone to decide if they are willing to fight for a future of hope and promise or surrender to tyranny and terror. He said that Israel has been at war since October 7.

Netanyahu said, “The horrors that Hamas perpetrated on October 7 remind us that we will not realize the promise of a better future unless we, the civilized world, are willing to fight the barbarians because the barbarians are ready to fight us and their goal is clear, shatter that promise and future, destroy all that we cherish and usher in a world of fear and darkness.”

He said, “This is a turning point, a turning point for leaders and nations. It is time for all of us to decide if we are willing to fight for a future of hope and promise or surrender to tyranny and terror. Now rest assured, Israel will fight. Since October 7, Israel has been at war. Israel did not start this war. Israel did not want this war. But Israel will win this war.” Speaking about Hamas’s attack on Israel and stressing Iran’s role in financing Hamas, he said, “Hamas launched this war by perpetrating the worst savagery our people have seen since the Holocaust. Hamas murdered children in front of their parents, murdered parents in front of their children. They burned people alive, they raped women, they beheaded men, they tortured Holocaust survivors, they kidnapped babies. They committed the most horrific crimes imaginable and they are part of the axis of evil that Iran has formed. An axis of terror that works by arming, training and financing Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen and other terror proxies throughout the Middle East and beyond the Middle East.” Netanyahu said, “In fighting Hamas and the Iranian axis of terror, Israel is fighting the enemies of civilization itself.” He noted that victory over enemies begins with moral clarity and knowing the difference between good and evil.

He said that as long as Hamas’s use of Palestinian human shields results in the international community blaming Israel, the terror group will continue to use it as a tool of terror and so will others.

“Victory over these enemies begins with moral clarity. It begins with knowing the difference between good and evil, between right and wrong. It means making a moral distinction between the deliberate murder of the innocent and the unintentional casualties that accompany every legitimate war, even the most just war,” Netanyahu said.

“It means holding Hamas responsible for the double war crime that it commits every day by deliberately targeting Israeli civilians while deliberately using Palestinian civilians as human shields. It means making clear that the use of human shields is not only an immoral tactic of terror but also an ineffective one because as long as Hamas’s use of Palestinian human shields results in the international community blaming Israel, Hamas will continue to use it as a tool of terror and so will others. Hamas will continue to use the basements in Gaza’s hospitals as the command posts of its vast terror tunnel network. It will continue to use mosques as fortified military positions and weapon depots. It will continue to steal fuel and humanitarian assistance from UN facilities,” he added.

He noted that Israel is making every effort to get Palestinian civilians out of harm’s way while Hamas is doing everything to keep “Palestinian civilians in harm’s way.” He said that Hamas is preventing foreign nationals from leaving Gaza and has been holding over 200 Israelis as hostages, which includes 33 children.

He urged every civilized nation to stand with Israel and added that Israel will continue to fight regardless of who stands with Israel.

“Israel will stand against the forces of barbarism until victory. I hope and pray that civilized nations everywhere will back this fight because Israel’s fight is your fight because if Hamas and Iran’s axis of evil win, you will be their next target. That’s why Israel’s victory will be your victory. Make no mistake, regardless of who stands with Israel, Israel will fight until this battle is won and Israel will prevail,” Netanyahu said.

Meanwhile, Israel Air Forces said that IDF forces have been continuing their ground operations in the Gaza Strip for the past few hours.

Taking to X, Israel Air Forces said, “IDF forces have been continuing their ground operations in the Gaza Strip for the past few hours. IDF fighters with the help of combat helicopters and remote manned aircraft, directed by the forces, eliminated terrorist squads that tried to attack the forces.”

Gives a clarion call for educating people about Sikhism

Your turban does not mean terrorism, New York City mayor says amid recent attacks on Sikhs

New York, October 30

The Sikh turban does not mean terrorism but symbolises faith, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said, as he described the recent attacks and hate crimes against the community as a “stain” on the country and vowed to protect its members.

He also gave a clarion call for educating people about Sikhism.

“You are not about terror; you are about protector. That is what needs to be taught throughout this entire city. Our young people need to know that, our adults need to know that,” Adams said while addressing members of the Sikh community at the Baba Makhan Shah Lubana Sikh Centre in the Queens neighbourhood of South Richmond Hill.

Describing the Sikh community as an “anchor” in the Richmond Hill neighbourhood, Adams said: “Your turban does not mean terrorism. It means protecting, it means community, it means family, it means faith, it means city, it means us coming together. We will change the dialogue and narrative with you. We can do it together.”

Adams and New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar met and addressed members of the Sikh community here on Sunday, in the wake of recent incidents of hate crime and assault against Sikhs.

On October 15, a 19-year-old Sikh boy was attacked by Christopher Philippeaux, 26, while he was riding the bus in Richmond Hill. Philippeaux punched the teenager in the back of the head, tried to knock off his turban and told him “We don’t wear that in this country.” Philippeaux has been charged with assault as a hate crime and aggravated harassment, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said.

Within days of this, 66-year-old Jasmer Singh was attacked when his car collided with another vehicle. The driver of the other car, 30-year-old Gilbert Augustin, allegedly punched the elderly Sikh man three times in the head and face and Singh later succumbed to his injuries.

Describing the attack against Singh as a “violent senseless act”, Adams said, “Jasmer should still be with us. He should still be with his son. He should still be living out the American dream, watching his son, who’s now an immigration attorney.

“He should still be…part of this community. That dream turned into a nightmare the other day when his life was taken from us prematurely,” Adams said, flanked by Singh’s son Subeg Singh Multani and other members of the Sikh community.

Describing Sikhs as “protectors” of society, Rajkumar asserted that the hateful targeting of Sikhs is “not acceptable” and perpetrators of such violence would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of law.

“For the first time, we are going to use the levers of government to end hate crimes against Sikh Americans. For the first time, we are going to come together and…educate…New York State, the United States and the entire world about who the Sikh people truly are so we are not attacked and misunderstood,” Rajkumar, the first Indian-American woman elected to New York State Office and who described herself as a “daughter of Punjab”, said.

Rajkumar said this was not the first time she had visited the gurdwara and had spoken out against hate crimes. “But it is the last time I want to be standing here speaking out against hate crimes. Starting now we are going to end the hateful targeting of Sikhs,” she said.

Golden Temple bedecked with flowers to mark Parkash Purb of Sri Guru Ram Das

Amritsar, October 29

The Golden Temple complex has been decorated with aromatic flowers from across the country and abroad to mark the ‘Parkash Purb’ (birth anniversary) of Sri Guru Ram Das, the founder of holy city.

Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh and SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami have extended their greetings on the occasion that falls on Monday (October 30).

Owing to the Nanakshahi calendar row leading to discrepancies in the dates of various Gurpurbs, the occasion was commemorated twice in October. The Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC), which follows the ‘mool’ (original) Nanakshahi calendar, had already observed the occasion on October 9.

Nonetheless, the SGPC commemorates Gurpurbs on the basis of ‘revised’ version of the Nanakshahi calendar.

To mark the occasion, hundreds of quintals of different kinds of flowers, especially imported from Thailand and Singapore, as well as procured from the local market, were arranged to embellish the entire passage leading to the sanctum sanctorum, Darshani Deori and the walls of the Akal Takht.

The devotees from Mumbai and Kolkata have arrived specially to perform ‘sewa’ of flower decoration. Satinder Singh said flower varieties like orchids have been imported from Thailand and anthurium has been arranged in bulk from Singapore. “We have arranged those varieties which have a shelf life of over four days,” he said.

Harpreet Kaur, another devotee from Mumbai, said, “Our group has been fortunate in performing the sewa for the past several years by the grace of Almighty.”

Amit from Kolkata said that it was his first visit to the Golden Temple and he was mesmerised by the ambience of the shrine. “We expect to complete the flower decoration by late evening,” he said.

SGPC secretary Partap Singh said that the bhog of Akhand Path would be performed tomorrow at Gurdwara Sri Manji Sahib Diwan Hall, followed by Gurmat programmes.

As the tradition goes, besides the Gurmat programmes, the ‘Jalau’ (show of splendour) would also be displayed at the sanctum sanctorum, Akal Takht and Gurdwara Baba Atal Rai tomorrow. In the evening, the entire complex will be illuminated with lights and fireworks would be organised to mark the occasion.

Civil order breaking down, says UN as 4 Gaza aid warehouses looted; toll 8K

New Delhi, October 29

The death toll in the besieged Gaza Strip crossed 8,000 and a breakdown of civil administration was apparent as Israel’s incessant bombing entered the fourth week on Sunday with reports of hungry mobs looting UN aid warehouses.

The Palestinian health ministry said of the 8,000 Palestinians killed between October 7 and 29, over 3,300 were children and 2,000 women. Thousands of desperate people broke into four UN aid warehouses in Gaza to take away flour and basic hygiene products which the UN said was “a worrying sign that civil order is starting to breakdown after three weeks of war and a tight siege on Gaza. People are scared, frustrated and desperate”. Hamas’ chief in Gaza Yehia Sinwar said they were “ready to immediately” release all hostages if Tel Aviv released all the Palestinian prisoners, but the Israeli military dismissed the offer as “psychological terror”. Despite the Israeli offensive, rockets continued slamming into southern Israel amid a constant wail of sirens.

Two more hospitals were in danger of being bombed even as tanks and infantry pushed into Gaza on Friday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said this was the “second stage” in the war. This “stage” is witnessing the most intense bombardment so far while more ground forces are pouring into Gaza. An Israeli airstrike in Gaza’s Khan Younis killed 13, including 10 from one family. To the partial relief of Gazans, some more aid trucks rolled in from Egypt while Israel lifted the communication blackout. The severity of the bombing can be gauged from the Israeli military’s claim of having hit over 450 targets over the past 24 hours. Netanyahu also figured in a brief social media controversy over his post blaming the intelligence for the October 7 Hamas incursion. Later, he withdrew the statement and apologised.

About 10,000 people sheltering in and around Shifa Hospital and the admitted patients were in harm’s way as Israeli airstrikes hit its vicinity. Israel has accused Hamas of having a secret command post beneath the hospital, without providing much evidence, but for computer-generated images and statements of two alleged Hamas fighters. Airstrikes also hit the neighbourhood of Al-Quds Hospital, where many Gazans have taken shelter.
