Three women pilots of IAF set to fly frontline military jets

3 Indian Air Force Women Pilots To Make History, Set To Fly Military Jets

NEW DELHI: The first three women fighter pilots of the country are set to script history next month when they will fly military jets after completing a strenuous training in the coming three weeks.

Avani Chaturvedi, Bhawana Kanth and Mohana Singhwere commissioned as flying officers in July last year, less than a year after the government decided to open the fighter stream for women on an experimental basis.

“You will be glad to know that their performance has been on par with other pilots despite the streneous and demanding nature of flying,” Chief of Air Staff B S Dhanoa said addressing a press conference.A senior IAF official involved in training of the three women pilots said they will steer the combat jets next month.Currently, the three women pilots are flying Hawk advanced jet trainersThe IAF chief said the next batch of three women trainee pilots has been selected for the fighter stream in July and is presently undergoing stage-2 of fighter pilot training.

“On successful completion of training, the three women fighter pilots will be commissioned into the fighter stream in December this year,” Dhanoa said.

New Delhi, August 29

Lockheed Martin is closing in on an international deal for F-16 fighter planes, and has offered to eventually build all the jets at a proposed plant in India if it wins a bigger order to supply the Indian Air Force, a top executive said.

The US defence giant and Sweden’s Saab are in a two horse-race to equip the Indian military with at least 100 single-engine jets that have to be produced locally under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make-in-India’ plan.

Randall L. Howard, who leads F-16 business development, said Lockheed is offering to make India the sole F-16 production centre, so eventually it will make the planes not just for India, but also for other countries.

Lockheed is closing its F-16 production line at Forth Worth, Texas, and will supply new orders from a new facility at Greenville, South Carolina. But the plan was to eventually build the planes in India, Howard told Reuters.

“Our next customer, which we believe to be very soon … we will produce those aircraft out of that (Greenville) facility,” he said. “As you look beyond that, the opportunity for India is to then move all of that into India and that’s what’s being proposed … to have a single production line in India that would service the new production requirements of global demand, the global market.”

India’s government is set to issue a formal request to Lockheed and Saab over the next few days to provide information about their plans to design, develop and produce combat jets in India, a government official said.

The planes will be produced under a new ‘strategic partnership’ policy under which the foreign aircraft maker will collaborate with an Indian firm to develop a world-class indigenous aeronautical base that India has struggled to build for decades.

Lockheed has picked Tata Advanced Systems as its local partner, while Saab has not yet announced its Indian collaborator to produce the Gripen E aircraft that it has offered to the air force.

Howard said the plan to relocate the F-16 plant to India enjoyed the support of the US government after initial concerns it would conflict with President Donald Trump’s ‘America First’ campaign under which he has pressed for companies to invest in the United States and create jobs.

Howard said winning the Indian contract worth billions of dollars would protect thousands of jobs at Lockheed in the United States as well as at dozens of components suppliers, since the Indian facility will come up gradually.

“We will start with an assembly, you can’t go from ground zero, from a standing stop to full production in a week. You have to phase it in.”

India’s Air Force is running short of hundreds of aircraft as its indigenous Light Combat Aircraft programme is dogged by delays and quality issues.

Modi’s government last year cleared the purchase of 36 Rafale combat jets from France’s Dassault Aviation, scaling back a plan to buy 126 planes, leaving the Air Force scrambling for replacements. Reuters

Army attacked at Myanmar border, repels insurgents

‘Significant’ casualties inflicted on Naga militants

NEW DELHI: Soldiers inflicted heavy casualties on militants belonging to the NSCN(K) along the Myanmar border in Nagaland early on Wednesday, the army said.

Unidentified insurgents indiscriminately shot at an army column moving along the Indo-Myanmar border at 4.45am, the Kolkata-headquartered Eastern Command said.

But the soldiers brought the insurgents under “heavy retaliatory fire”.

“Own troops suffered no casualties during the firefight,” the Eastern Command said in a brief statement. An army column consists of up to 100 soldiers.

The army did not put a figure on the number of slain insurgents, but on previous occasions when the force announced “heavy casualties” the figure was around 40 to 50.

The Eastern Command denied media reports that Wednesday’s operation was a “surgical strike” conducted across the border in Myanmar. “It is reiterated that own troops did not cross the international border,” the statement said.

The army crossed into Myanmar on June 9 and destroyed two militant camps — five days after the National Socialist Council of Nagaland Khaplang (NSCN-K) ambushed a convoy in Manipur and killed 18 soldiers. It was the biggest loss for the army in a single attack in nearly two decades.

Flashpoints on the border

June 7, 2017 Major David Manlun died fighting NSCN(K) militants in Nagaland’s Mon district. Three militants were also killed.

Nov 15, 2015 Assam Rifles killed 4 NSCN(K) militants in encounter in Nagaland’s Tuensang district.

Aug 29, 2015 Assam Rifles killed 8 NSCN(K) militants in Tuensang.

June 4, 2015 NSCN(K) ambushed an army convoy in Manipur’s Chandel, killing 18 soldiers.

May 3, 2015 Eight soldiers killed by NSCN(K) militants in Mon district.

A Facebook post by a militant leader claimed the army crossed the international border, a charge the military categorically denied.

The gunfight happened on the outskirts of Langkhu village inside a Myanmar-occupied Naga area, about 15km from the border, wrote Isak Sumi, who is said to be on the National Investigation Agency’s “most wanted list” of militants.

“The encounter started around 3am when the elite unit of the Naga Army detected a column of Indian Army approaching their temporary makeshift camp… The exchange was continuing till the time of filing this report,” said Sumi, who is referred to as the PRO of the NSCN(K) by the NIA on its website. The 2015 strikes in Myanmar were carried out as insurgents often attack soldiers and slip through the porous border to safe havens in the neighbouring country.

A bilateral agreement with Myanmar allows free movement of people from the two countries within 16km of the border.

India is reviewing the impact of the agreement amid a large number of Rohingya Muslims fleeing Myanmar and seeking refuge following a military crackdown in the Rakhine province.

The visa-free movement along the Indo-Myanmar border allows people to stay for up to 72 hours in the area with valid permits issued by the authorities.

Aadhaar made mandatory for registration of death

Aadhaar made mandatory for registration of death

New Delhi, August 4

The government has made Aadhaar number mandatory for the registration of death from October 1, to prevent identity fraud.

(Follow The Tribune on Facebook; and Twitter @thetribunechd)

The Home Ministry said on Friday that it would be applicable for the residents of all states except Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and Meghalaya, for which a date would be notified separately.

“Aadhaar number will be required for the purpose of establishing the identity of the deceased for the purpose of death registration with effect from October 1,” according to a notification issued by the Home Ministry.

The office of the Registrar General, which functions under the home ministry, said the use of Aadhaar would result in ensuring accuracy of the details provided by the relatives or dependents or acquaintances of the deceased.

“It will provide an effective method to prevent identity fraud. It will also help in recording the identity of the deceased person. Further, it will obviate the need for producing multiple documents to prove the identity of the deceased person,” it said. PTI

How marriage affects ability to be a JAG officer: HC to govt

How marriage affects ability to be a JAG officer: HC to govt

New Delhi, August 24How does marriage affect one’s ability to become an officer in the Judge Advocate General (JAG) service, the legal arm of the Indian Army, the Delhi High Court asked on Thursday. The query was posed to the Centre after it submitted before a Bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice Sangita Dhingra Sehgal that now even married men are barred from being recruited in the Army. The submission came after the court on August 10 had questioned the non-recruitment of married women in the JAG and observed that such acts amount to “hostile and 100 per cent discrimination”.It had made the observation while hearing a PIL by lawyer Kush Kalra claiming there was institutionalised discrimination against married women by not inducting them in JAG service. The government today contended before the Bench that since married men are also barred from being recruited in the Army, after a recent amendment in its recruitment rules, the PIL has become infructuous. The court, however, did not agree with the contention and questioned the rationale behind barring married individuals from getting recruited in the Army.“Suppose one gets married and then wants to join JAG service? One can get married at the age of 18 years. How does marriage affect someone’s ability to become a JAG officer?“Right to family is recognised as a part of right to life under Article 21. Apply your mind. There can be no other rationale here, other than somebody’s whim. Somebody has got something in their mind against marriage,” the Bench said.It said the impact of the change in recruitment rules was that a person should either be unmarried or get divorced if they want to join the Army. The court did not pass any order and adjourned the matter to November 9 to be heard by the regular Bench which was hearing the plea along with another PIL by Kalra on the issue of only gainfully employed men being recruited in the Territorial Army (TA), the second line of defence after the regular Army. The TA is an organisation of volunteers who receive military training in order to be mobilised for the country’s defence in case of an emergency. — PTI

Chinese military has ability to defeat all invading enemies: Xi Jinping

“Our military has the confidence and ability to write a new chapter in building of strong military and make new contributions to towards realisation of the China dream of great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and safeguarding world peace,” Xi said

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday said the People’s Liberation Army is capable of vanquishing “all invading enemies” and praised its combat readiness as he reviewed a massive military parade to mark the 90th founding anniversary of the world’s largest armed force. Dressed in camouflage, Xi inspected 12,000 troops in various formations from an open-top military jeep at the parade held in Zhurihe — Asia’s largest military training centre in the middle of a desert in Inner Mongolia.

Over 100 fighter jets flew overhead and almost 600 types of weaponry were on display for the occasion — nearly half of which were making their debut in public, according to the Chinese Defence Ministry. In his address to the soldiers, Xi said the PLA should strictly follow the absolute leadership of the Communist Party of China and “march to wherever the Party points to.”

“I firmly believe that our gallant military has both confidence and ability to defeat all invading enemies,” said Xi, who heads the Central Military Commission, which holds the overall command of the PLA – the world’s largest army. While there was no reference in his speech to over a month-long India-China military standoff at Doklam in the Sikkim section, his remarks came in the midst of shrill official media campaign and assertions by the Foreign and Defence Ministries here accusing Indian troops of trespassing into Chinese territory at Doklam.

The Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman said Zhurihe was selected to highlight the PLA’s combat readiness, but he emphasised that war-zone trainings had been long scheduled. “They have nothing to do with the current situation in the region,” Colonel Ren Guoqiang said in a statement.

Clad in camouflage military suit, 64-year-old Xi said the Chinese military has the confidence and ability to safeguard, national sovereignty, security and development interests. “Our military has the confidence and ability to write a new chapter in building of strong military and make new contributions to towards realisation of the China dream of great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and safeguarding world peace,” Xi said in his about 10-minute address – an event carried live on state television and radio.

India-china Standoff- Diplomatic Channels Will Continue To Be Used, Says Mea

The military parade was the biggest since 2015 in which army and air force displayed some of the most modern weapons including a new tank which reportedly held exercises in the high-altitude along the Indian border. The other weapons included long range nuclear and conventional missiles, the new J-15 – the new aircraft based carrier.

In his address, Xi asked the military to further improve its combativeness and modernise the national defence and armed forces. The Chinese military has the world’s second largest defence budget of USD 152 billion next to the US military. The PLA was founded on August 1, 1927 when the ruling CPC under the leadership of Mao Zedong carried on with his national liberation movement.

It is one of the rare national armies which still continues to function under the leadership of the CPC and not the Chinese government. “Officers and soldiers, you must unswervingly stick to the fundamental principle and system of the Party’s absolute leadership over the army, always listen to and follow the Party’s orders, and march to wherever the Party points to,” said Xi, the general secretary of the CPC Central Committee.

PLA officers and soldiers should firmly adhere to the fundamental goal of serving the people wholeheartedly, and always stand together with the people, Xi said. He also said China needs a strong army more than ever, urging the building of PLA into a world-class military force.

Enjoying peace is a bliss for the people while protecting peace is the responsibility of the people’s army, he said. “The world is not all at peace, and peace must be safeguarded,” said Xi, who is expected to get a second five year term at the key meeting of the CPC later this year.

“Today, we are closer to the goal of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation than any other time in history, and we need to build a strong people’s military more than any other time in history,” he said. He urged the PLA to fully implement the CPC’s thoughts on building a strong military, follow the path of strengthening the army with Chinese characteristics, strive for the CPC’s target on strengthening the PLA under the new circumstances, and build the heroic PLA into a world-class military.

About 12,000 troops took part in the parade in which 129 aircraft and 571 pieces of equipment were on display. Dongfeng missiles which include short, long and medium rage of rockets, variety of armoury including light tanks, drones were also deployed.

Helicopter borne troops demonstrated in quick landing and taking combat positions. Xi Jinping presided over the military parade, hours after US President Donald Trump renewed his criticism over Beijing’s failure to rein in North Korea.

North Korea tested an intercontinental ballistic missile on last Friday which it claims could reach all of the US. President Trump has been piling pressure on China, Pyongyang’s only major ally that provides an economic lifeline to the reclusive regime, to use its leverage to make North Korea halt its nuclear and missile programs.

“I am very disappointed in China,” Trump had said in a tweet yesterday, adding that Beijing could have easily solved the problem posed by North Korea. China is also concerned by the tense situation in the Korea Peninsula and the deployment of Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) missile by US in South Korea to counter threats from North Korea.
