Meet Gopi Thotakura, a pilot set to become 1st Indian to venture into space as tourist

Meet Gopi Thotakura, a pilot set to become 1st Indian to venture into space as tourist

Washington, April 13

Gopi Thotakura, an entrepreneur and a pilot, is set to become the first Indian to venture into space as a tourist on Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin’s NS-25 mission.

Thotakura was selected as one of the six crew members for the mission, making him the first Indian space tourist and the second Indian to venture into space after the Indian Army’s Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma in 1984.

The flight date is yet to be announced, the aerospace company said.

This mission will be the seventh human flight for the New Shepard programme and the 25th in its history. To date, the programme has flown 31 humans above the Karman line, the proposed conventional boundary between Earth’s atmosphere and outer space.

New Shepard is a fully reusable sub-orbital launch vehicle developed for space tourism by Blue Origin.

According to Blue Origin, “Gopi is a pilot and aviator who learned how to fly before he could drive.”

He is the co-founder of Preserve Life Corp, a global centre for holistic wellness and applied health located near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

In addition to flying jets commercially, he pilots bush, aerobatic, and seaplanes, as well as gliders and hot air balloons, and has served as an international medical jet pilot.

A lifelong traveller, his most recent adventure took him to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

Andhra Pradesh-born Thotakura is a graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Other crew members of the flight include Mason Angel, Sylvain Chiron, Kenneth L. Hess, Carol Schaller, and former Air Force Captain Ed Dwight, who was selected by President John F Kennedy in 1961 as the nation’s first Black astronaut candidate but was never granted the opportunity to fly to space.

During the flight, each astronaut will carry a postcard to space on behalf of Blue Origin’s foundation, Club for the Future.

This programme gives students access to space on Blue Origin’s rockets, including an all-digital method to create and send postcards. The Club’s mission is to inspire and mobilise future generations to pursue careers in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) for the benefit of Earth.

From an environmental standpoint, nearly 99 per cent of New Shepard’s dry mass is reused, including the booster, capsule, engine, landing gear, and parachutes.

New Shepard’s engine is fuelled by highly efficient liquid oxygen and hydrogen. During the flight, the only byproduct is water vapour with no carbon emissions, the company said.

New Delhi, April 14

Israel faced an unprecedented attack by Iran late last night, but it and its allies – the US and UK — managed to intercept 99 per cent of the more than 300 drones and missiles launched toward its territory mid-air. Regional tensions, however, remain high amid fears of further escalation in the event of a possible Israeli counter-strike.

Related News

Iran launched the attack in response to a strike widely blamed on Israel on an Iranian consular building in Syria earlier this month, which killed two Iranian generals. Israel said Iran launched 170 drones, more than 30 cruise missiles and over 120 ballistic missiles.

By Sunday morning, Iran said the attack was over and Israel reopened its air space. “We will build a regional coalition and collect the price from Iran in the way and at the time that suits us,” said a key member of Israel’s War Cabinet, Benny Gantz.

  • Intercepts medium to long-range missiles; ‘Green Pine’ radar tracks missiles 2,400 km away

Arrow-3 for precision

  • Top layer enables longer range, high-altitude interception with precise missile engagements

Eam Jaishankar dials Israeli counterpart

Will exact price when time is right: Israel

  • Israeli minister Benny Gantz said they “will exact a price from Iran in response to its missile and drone attack when the time is right”

There’ll be much larger response: Iran

  • Iran too has warned Israel and the US of “a much larger response if there is any retaliation for its mass drone and missile attack on Israel”

UN fears escalation

  • UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for immediate cessation of hostilities, fearing real danger of a devastating region-wide escalation

Israel’s feat of thwarting the attack was possible with the technology it developed in the past four decades. It has a multilayered air-defence network that includes systems capable of intercepting a variety of threats, including long-range missiles, cruise missiles, drones and short-range rockets.

During these four decades, its allies like the US, helped Israel with funding and technology. By 2020, the total US financial contribution toward the Israel’s Arrow Weapon System exceeded $3.7 billion (almost Rs 30,000 crore).

The air defence shield was tested to the hilt early on Sunday during which the US and UK pitched in with men and machines to counter drones and missiles using their own resources.

Lt Col Peter Leaner, spokesperson for the Israeli Defence Forces, said Iran launched 180 explosive drones, 120 ballistic missiles and 30 cruise missiles.

A statement from the US Department of Defence said, “US forces in the Middle East intercepted dozens of missiles and UAVs en route to Israel, launched from Iran, Iraq, Syria and Yemen.” In London, British PM Rishi Sunak praised pilots of the Royal Air Force pilots confirming that British jets shot down “a number of” drones.

Israel and Iran have for years been engaged in a shadow war marked by incidents like the Damascus strike. But Sunday’s assault, which set off air raid sirens across Israel, was the first time Iran has launched a direct military assault on Israel, despite decades of enmity.

Meanwhile, Daniel Hagari, Israeli military spokesman, said none of the drones and cruise missiles reached Israel and that only a few ballistic missiles got through. He said minor damage was caused to an Israeli airbase, but it was functioning. Rescuers said a 7-year-old girl was seriously wounded in southern Israel, apparently in a missile strike, though the police were investigating the circumstances.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu posted on X: “We intercepted. We blocked. Together, we will win.”

Later in the day, Biden convened a G7 meet to coordinate a rebuke to Iran and prevent a wider regional escalation. The G7 meeting, Biden said, was intended “to coordinate a united diplomatic response to Iran’s brazen attack”. (With agency inputs)

40 years at Siachen, Army lists combat capabilities

40 years at Siachen, Army lists combat capabilities

New Delhi, April 13

Heavy-lift helicopters, drones carrying logistics, deployment of all-terrain vehicles and laying of an extensive network of tracks are among the host of measures that have enhanced combat in Siachen glacier, the world’s highest battlefield.

‘Operation Meghdoot’

  • ‘Operation Meghdoot’ was launched on April 13, 1984, when the Army and the IAF advanced to the Siachen glacier
  • The operation involved airlifting of Army soldiers by the IAF and dropping them on the glacial peaks. IAF helicopters had been operating at Siachen since 1978

As the Army today marks the 40th year of its presence at the strategically significant Siachen glacier, the Leh-based 14 Corps posted on X today that tributes were paid at the Siachen War Memorial in memory of those who guarded the ‘Frozen Frontier’.

‘Operation Meghdoot’ was launched on April 13, 1984, when the Army and the IAF advanced to Siachen glacier. The operation involved airlifting of Army soldiers by the IAF and dropping them on the glacial peaks. IAF helicopters had been operating at Siachen since 1978.

Till 1984, Pakistan had been granting permissions for foreign mountaineering expeditions in Siachen. It all happened due to the demarcation of the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan after the 1971 war. The LoC documents beyond point NJ 9842, the line shall run thence northwards. India and Pakistan have varying perception of what is northwards.

The IAF today said “tactical and strategic airlifters An-12s, An-32s and IL-76s transported stores and troops and airdropped supplies to high-altitude airfields”.

As of today, nearly all aircraft of the IAF, including Rafale, Su-30MKI, Chinook, Apache, Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Mk III & Mk IV, Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachand, MiG-29, Mirage-2000, C-17, C-130 J, IL-76 and An-32, operate in support of Operation Meghdoot.

An official said, “The induction of heavy-lift helicopters and logistic drones has vastly improved the supply of essentials to the personnel deployed in posts that remain cut off especially in winters.”

Troop comfort has improved due to availability of special clothing, mountaineering equipment and advanced rations. Fresh ration and vegetables are now a reality for forward posts, thanks to new logistic initiatives.

There has been an improvement in mobile and data connectivity in the region. The introduction of the VSAT technology has revolutionised communication at the glacier, providing the troops with data and Internet connectivity. The VSAT or very small aperture terminal is a data-transmission technology.

The Army has also been focusing on boosting the medical infrastructure in Siachen. The Indian Space Research Organisation has established telemedicine nodes that provide critical medical support not only to the troops but also to the local populace and tourists in the Nubra valley.

Indian Army successfully conducts field trials of anti-tank guided missile system

Indian Army successfully conducts field trials of anti-tank guided missile system

PTI

New Delhi, April 14

The Indian Army has successfully carried out field trials of indigenously-developed man-portable anti-tank guided missile (MPATGM) weapon system, paving way for its induction into the force’s armoury.

The weapon system has been designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), officials said.

The overall system consisted of the MPATGM, launchers, target acquisition device and a fire control unit.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has complimented the DRDO and the Indian Army for the successful trials of the system, terming it as an important step towards achieving self-reliance in advanced technology-based defence system development.

The MPATG weapon system has been field evaluated in different flight configurations several times with an objective of proving the technology with high superiority, the defence ministry said.

“The warhead flight trials were successfully conducted at the Pokhran Field Firing Range on April 13. Missile performance and warhead performance were found to be remarkable,” it said on Sunday.

It said an adequate number of missile firing trials have been successfully conducted towards achieving compliance of complete operational envelope as stipulated in the General Staff Qualitative Requirements.

“Penetration trials of the tandem warhead system of MPATGM have been successfully completed and it is found capable of defeating modern armour protected main battle tanks,” it said.

The weapon system is well-equipped for operation in both day and night.

“The dual mode seeker functionality is a great value addition to the missile capability for tank warfare. With this, technology development and successful demonstration have been concluded and the system is now ready for final user evaluation trials leading towards its induction into the Indian Army,” the ministry said.

Explained: How Israel’s air-defence system successfully intercepted 99% of over 300 Iranian drones, missiles

Military spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari calls it ‘a very significant strategic success’
Explained: How Israel's air-defence system successfully intercepted 99% of over 300 Iranian drones, missiles

Jerusalem, April 14

An incoming attack by Iranian drones and ballistic missiles poses the latest challenge to Israel’s air defence system, which already has been working overtime to cope with incoming rocket, drone and missile attacks throughout the six-month war against Hamas.

The Israeli military spokesman said on Sunday that 99% of more than 300 Iranian drones and missiles were intercepted by Israel and its allies.

Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari called that “a very significant strategic success.”

Hagari said Iran fired 170 drones, more than 30 cruise missiles and more than 120 ballistic missiles. Of those, several ballistic missiles reached Israeli territory, causing minor damage to an air base.

Here’s a closer look at Israel’s multi-layered air-defence system that successfully intercepted 99% of over 300 Iranian drones, missiles:

The Arrow: This system developed with the US is designed to intercept long-range missiles, including the types of ballistic missiles Iran said it launched on Saturday. The Arrow, which operates outside the atmosphere, has been used in the current war to intercept long-range missiles launched by Houthi militants in Yemen.

David’s Sling: Also developed with the US, the David’s Sling is meant to intercept medium-range missiles, such as those possessed by Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Patriot: This American-made system is the oldest member of Israel’s missile-defense system – used during the First Gulf War in 1991 to intercept Scud missiles fired by Iraq’s leader at the time, Saddam Hussein. The Patriot is now used to shoot down aircraft, including drones.

Iron Dome: This system, developed by Israel with U.S. backing, specializes in shooting down short-range rockets. It has intercepted thousands of rockets since it was activated early last decade – including thousands of interceptions during the current war against Hamas and Hezbollah. Israel says it has a success rate of over 90%.

Iron Beam: Israel is developing a new system to intercept incoming threats with laser technology. Israel has said this system will be a game changer because it is much cheaper to operate than existing systems. However, it is not yet operational.

Iran retaliation LIVE Updates: Iran launches retaliatory attack on Israel with hundreds of drones, missiles

Iran retaliation LIVE Updates: Iran launches retaliatory attack on Israel with hundreds of drones, missiles

Jerusalem, April 14

Booms and air raid sirens sounded across Israel early Sunday after Iran launched hundreds of drones, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles in an unprecedented revenge mission that pushed the Middle East closer to a regionwide war.

Related News

The attack marked the first time Iran has launched a direct military assault on Israel, despite decades of enmity dating back to the country’s 1979 Islamic Revolution. Condemnation from the United Nations chief and others was swift, with France saying Iran “is risking a potential military escalation,” Britain calling the attack “reckless” and Germany saying Iran and its proxies “must stop it immediately.”

The Israeli military’s spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said Iran fired scores of drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles — with the vast majority intercepted outside Israel’s borders. He said warplanes intercepted over 10 cruise missiles alone, also outside Israeli airspace.

He said a handful of missiles managed to land in Israel. Rescuers said one strike critically wounded a 10-year-old girl in a Bedouin Arab town in southern Israel, while Hagari said another missile struck an army base, causing light damage but no injuries.

“A wide-scale attack by Iran is a major escalation,” Hagari said. Asked whether Israel would respond, Hagari said only that the army “does and will do whatever is required to protect the security of the state of Israel.”

US forces downed some of the Iran-launched drones flying toward Israel, according to a US defense official and two US officials who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the matter.

Iran had vowed revenge since an April 1 airstrike in Syria killed two Iranian generals inside an Iranian consular building. Iran accused Israel of being behind the attack. Israel hasn’t commented on it.

Israel and Iran have been on a collision course throughout Israel’s six-month war against Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip. The war erupted after Hamas and Islamic Jihad, two militant groups backed by Iran, carried out a devastating cross-border attack on Oct. 7 that killed 1,200 people in Israel and kidnapped 250 others. An Israeli offensive in Gaza has caused widespread devastation and killed over 33,000 people, according to local health officials.

Almost immediately after the war erupted, Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed militant group in Lebanon, began attacking Israel’s northern border. The two sides have been involved in daily exchanges of fire, while Iranian-backed groups in Iraq, Syria and Yemen have launched rockets and missiles toward Israel.

In a statement carried late Saturday by Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency, the country’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard acknowledged launching “dozens of drones and missiles towards the occupied territories and positions of the Zionist regime.”                In a later statement, the Revolutionary Guard issued a direct warning to the US: “The terrorist US government is warned any support or participation in harming Iran’s interests will be followed by decisive and regretting response by Iran’s armed forces.”

IRNA also quoted an anonymous official saying ballistic missiles were part of the attack. A ballistic missile moves on an arch trajectory, heading up into space before gravity brings the weapon down at a speed several times faster than the speed of sound.

Israel has a multilayered air-defense network that includes systems capable of intercepting a variety of threats including long-range missiles, cruise missiles, drones and short-range rockets. However, in a massive attack involving multiple drones and missiles, the likelihood of a strike making it through is higher.

Iran has a vast arsenal of drones and missiles. Online videos shared by Iranian state television purported to show delta-wing-style drones resembling the Iranian Shahed-136s long used by Russia in its war on Ukraine. The slow-flying drones carry bombs. Ukraine has successfully used both surface-to-air missiles and ground fire to target them.

Air raid sirens were reported in numerous places including northern Israel, southern Israel, the northern West Bank and the Dead Sea near the Jordanian border.

Israel’s army ordered residents in the Golan Heights — near the Syrian and Lebanese borders — as well as the southern towns of Nevatim and Dimona and the Red Sea resort of Eilat “to stay near protective spaces until further notice.” Dimona is home to Israel’s main nuclear facility, and Nevatim has a major air base.

The army’s Home Front Command canceled school Sunday and limited public gatherings to no more than 1,000 people. Israel and some other countries in the region closed their airspace.

Earlier, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned: “Whoever harms us, we will harm them.”

In Washington, President Joe Biden convened a principals meeting of the National Security Council to discuss the attack. Biden again said in the face of Iran’s threats that his commitment to Israel’s security is “ironclad” — a change from the harsh criticism voiced in recent weeks over the war in Gaza.

Gen. Erik Kurilla, the head of the US military’s Central Command, was in Israel over the weekend consulting with Israeli defense officials. The Central Command oversees US forces in the Middle East.

Iran’s mission to the United Nations issued a warning to both Israel and the US “Should the Israeli regime make another mistake, Iran’s response will be considerably more severe,” it wrote online. “It is a conflict between Iran and the rogue Israeli regime, from which the US MUST STAY AWAY!”               For days, Iranian officials including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had threatened to “slap” Israel for its Syria strike.

In Iran’s capital, Tehran, witnesses saw long lines at gas stations early Sunday as people appeared worried about what may come next. Dozens of hard-liners demonstrated in support of the attack at Palestine Square.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported heavy Israeli airstrikes and shelling on multiple locations in south Lebanon following Iran’s launch of drones. The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah said it launched “dozens” of Katyusha rockets at an Israeli military site in the Golan Heights early Sunday. It was not immediately clear if there was any damage.

Iranian missiles or drones were intercepted in the sky above the Jordanian capital, Amman. In Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, and elsewhere in the country, residents reported seeing missiles in the sky and hearing explosions, likely from interceptions. In Syria, explosions were heard in the capital, Damascus, and elsewhere. Britain-based war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that Syrian air defenses tried to shoot down Israeli attempts to intercept Iranian missiles. Jordan Air Force shoots down Iranian drones flying over to Israel

mman, April 14

Jordan’s air force intercepted and shot down dozens of Iranian drones that violated its airspace and were heading to Israel, two regional security sources said.

They said the army was also in a state of high alert and radar systems were monitoring any drone activity coming from the direction of Iraq and Syria.

Residents in several cities in the northern part of the country near Syria and central and southern areas heard heavy aerial activity.

In neighbourhoods south of the capital Amman, 60 km (37 miles) from Jerusalem, several downed drones were seen.

Residents gathered around the remnants of one suspected large drone that fell in a commercial area of the city’s Marj al Hamam suburb.

A security source had earlier said the country’s air force was intensifying reconnaissance flights.

Jordan had earlier said it closed its airspace starting on Saturday night to all incoming, departing and transiting aircraft in what officials told Reuters were precautionary measures in the event of an Iranian strike across its border.

“The relevant authorities took the decision to close the airspace for precautionary reasons as a result of the surrounding security situation,” Jordan’s government spokesperson Muhannad Mubaideen said.

Mubaideen denied media reports that the kingdom had announced a state of emergency, adding there was no cause for concern among its citizens.

Jordan neighbours Syria and Iraq – both countries where Iranian proxy forces operate – and also is next door to Israel and the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

It has watched Israel’s war against the Palestinian group Hamas, another Iranian ally, with rising alarm for fear of getting caught in a crossfire.

Late last year, Amman asked Washington to deploy Patriot air defence systems to Jordan to bolster its border defences.

Officials say the Pentagon had since increased its military aid to the kingdom, a major regional ally, where hundreds of U.S. troops are based and hold exercises with the army throughout the year.

In January, three U.S. service members were killed and dozens wounded in a drone attack by Iran-backed militants on U.S. troops in northeastern Jordan near the Syrian border.

It was the first deadly strike against U.S. forces since the Israel-Hamas war erupted in October, and marked a major escalation in tensions that have engulfed the Middle East.

Iran warns Jordan over any moves to support Israel, Iran’s Fars news agency says

DUBAI: Iran is watching Jordan for any moves in support of Israel during Tehran’s retaliatory attacks, warning the country may become the “next target”, a military source told the semi-official news agency Fars on Sunday.

“A military informed source said (we) are closely monitoring Jordan’s movements during the punitive attacks … and if they participate in any possible action (to back Israel), they will be the next target,” Fars reported.
