HT PHOTOThe road will give respite to commuters who have to cross the Balongi light point.“The high-tension electricity pole that was in the middle of the road has been removed and we are all set to open the road March 5,” said GMADA chief administrator AK Sinha.
“The road will save commuters from the traffic bottlenecks at the Balongi light point,” said Rahul Kumar, a Kharar resident.
Once operational, the road would come as a major respite for the commuters who have to cross the Balongi light point daily. This is the only road as of now which connects Kharar with Chandigarh. People travelling to airport, Delhi, Patiala, Zirakpur, Panchkula and Ambala can now bypass SAS Nagar and Chandigarh by taking the new road. This would cut down the travel time.
People travelling to Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Kullu, Manali can take this road from Zirakpur and reach Kharar.
The airport road is already connected to the Zirakpur-Patiala highway near Chatt village. The traffic lights have already been put in place. The road is yet to be connected to McDonald’s in Dera Bassi and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has already been paid by GMADA to complete the work.
The authorities are installing streetlights, blinkers and signages on the road. The speed limit has been fixed at 60 km per hour and the SAS Nagar traffic police have been asked to ensure that commuters adhere to the speed limit.
