The mortal remains of Sepoy Jaspreet Singh, who was killed in Pakistani firing in the Naushera sector of Jammu and Kashmir, were consigned to flames with full state honours at his native village here on Wednesday.Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has announced Rs 10 lakh financial assistance to the family, and a government job to the younger brother of the slain soldier.(Follow The Tribune on Facebook; and Twitter @thetribunechd)Jaspreet (24) was killed during a ceasefire violation by Pakistan Army in Rajouri district last night. He belonged to the 8 Sikh Light Infantry regiment and was attached with the Rashtriya Rifles.Senior officers from the Army and the Moga district administration, local MLAs and a large number of people, including from neighbouring areas, were present when the martyr’s last rites were performed this evening.Jaspreet’s father Sarwan Singh lit the funeral pyre.Earlier, a pall of gloom descended in Talwandi Mallian vllage when Jaspreet’s body, wrapped in the tricolour, was brought there.His younger brother Kuldeep Singh said Jaspreet recently completed three years in the Sikh Light Infantry regiment and was planning to come home on July 29.The martyr’s family members and some local villagers demanded that Pakistan be given a “befitting reply for its repeated misadventures”.”Our government must avenge the sacrifice of the soldiers and teach Pakistan a lesson,” a local villager said.Meanwhile, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has sanctioned Rs 5 lakh as battle casualty compensation and another Rs 5 lakh as general compensation to the family of the martyred soldier, along with a job for his younger brother in the police department, an official spokesperson said in Chandigarh.Jaspreet is survived by his parents and four siblings.The spokesperson said Rs 25,000 has also been given to the family for cremation related expenses.”The job for Jaspreet’s younger brother is being provided under the honour and gratitude scheme of the Punjab government,” he said. — PTI
